Brief Edinburgh Circle update, September 2024
Dear members of our informal Circle on the promotion of African languages,
A few brief pieces of information this time...
Circle activities
Our Circle is present at the German African Studies Conference in Bayreuth these days, where we have organized a panel on “the future of Africa’s education and the role of language.” A number of Circle members will be present, either as convenors, discussants and/or presenters.
We will also be present at the Swiss Research Africa Days at the end of October in Bern, with a panel ‘towards sustainable language policies in Africa.’
In addition, work for the Journal is progressing. It is proving to be a challenge to get two peer reviews for every article that has been submitted. Please respond to requests to review as you receive them – and if you can review, please do so on time!
Circle member activities
On 26 September, Cosmas Rai Amenorvi succesfully defended his PhD dissertation (on Ghanaian youth language) at Leiden University (Netherlands).
Some of you may be interested in this recent book chapter by Billian Otundo, on the attitudes of Kenyan student teachers towards translanguaging.
If you are wondering whether or not to read the book by Michael Kretzer and Russell Kaschula on language policies in the SADC region, check out this recent review (no paywall with the link).
New circle member
We welcome Prof Dr Immaculée Harushimana, City University of New York, USA, as the latest member of our informal Circle.
As always, if you have things or hear of things that you think might be of interest to Circle members, don’t hesitate to send a short message, either via the mail or via WhatsApp - we will be happy to share the information.
Best regards,
Bert (also on behalf of Comfort, Sarita and Taiwo).
